Donaldson Cave Now closed to hiker due to WNS white nose syndrome that is associated with killing bats at an alarming rate. By closing the cave to hikers they hope to stop the spread of this condition and preserve the bat population in Indiana and the nation

- A beautiful state park with beautiful wide hiking trails and of course the awesome never ending white sand beach and breathtakingly beautiful sand dunes. Birding there is spectacular. Warblers, the tiniest and among the most colorful of migrating birds rest at this park during migration. This park is our national heritage and it saddens me that it is not in better repair. Took a hike out to the bird observation deck on trail 10 last year and it was a pile of rubble. What an eyesore! This needs to be a non negotiable rebuild. Organize an event and donate the proceeds. Ask for donations from the public, whatever it takes. The boardwalk on trail 2 is not totally accessible either as part of it is underwater. This needs to be rebuilt as well. You get halfway across and need to wade through a swamp or turn around and go back. The disrepair of these two trails is a huge disappointment as they are recommended to be the best trails for birding which is why I selected them prior to starting my hike. There is no reason why the boardwalk could not be wheelchair accessible. Having great trails for birding diversifies the demographics of people attracted to this park. Other states have wheelchair accessible boardwalks for birding. I so hope we can measure up or raise the bar as this is our national landmark not just for the beaches, but for the sand dunes, the wildlife and the beautiful topography as well.

The sign is gone, the lake is dry. - I have called the state and local officials, no one wants to claim or fix this lake, it was the only place Decatur county had for hunting and fishing. Now it is a mud pit and people are dumping truck loads of trash where we used to park. Hopefully someone will step up with some tax dollars and fix this mess.

memories - I have been coming to whitewater state park for over 25 years. I first came with my mammaw and papaw with the camper. I played one the beach and still have the photograph. I fished there with my now deceased dad. I have gone to reunions, birthdays, and concerts. Today I still hike the trails and enjoy the local wildlife.

Shades is the place to be!! - I live in the city (Indianpolis) but when i can i escape to shades. I stumbled upon shades and it was the greatest adventure Id had. Its never to croweded always quiet, and the trails are beautiful! Turkey run isnt to far away and though its quite nice and popular it makes for crowded trails people yelling and no parking. I just love shades. Its my all time favorite!

- Has anyone caught a amazon piranha in the lake at Fort Harrison State Park? My husband caught one today 9-1-14. I wonder if that is the reason we did not catch anything but baby bluegill. Maybe there are more and their eating the fish?????

- Can something be done about the beaver dam on the inlet off of Long Lake. The dam is preventing water to go into the waterway. You have to drag your boat halfway through the canal.
