Missouri Parks Visitor Reviews
A cool place to visit even in the winter - I took a visit on February 28th. The sky was overcast and cloudy. I wish I had a telephoto lens on my camera to get a shot of the bald eagles.
12/15/2011 Ha Ha Tonka State Park by Mama Cat
My Son and Me - My Son took me here a few years ago and I loved it. Now I find out that he takes ALL of his new girlfriends here for there FIRST date. How cute. He just loves it. Me too.
12/12/2011 Babler State Park by Cristina Johnson
Child Torture - I was locked up here as a child as well. It was cruel and torturous and I saw plenty of blood and injuries to the kids there.
Good O Course - Spent a day on the orienteering course here and had a great time. All points were marked and right where they should have been. Great place to Mountain bike as well.
Love the new equestrian trail -
10/4/2011 Ha Ha Tonka State Park by Missourian
This is one state park to see... - There are lots of plants and animals to see. During our last trip to Ha Ha Tonka we saw; deer, fox, badger, raccoon, squirrel, rabbit and many species of birds. The ruins are interesting, the mechanics of the water tower and pump are very interesting as is the the spring below. On a HOT day the spring is the place to ESCAPE to a cool, natural ~58 degrees Fahrenheit!
10/3/2011 Washington State Park by Name
Nice park but.... - The park has nice looking camping spots and great trails, however the staff in the campground are less than desirable. If you're looking for a fun place to camp, go to one of the other parks nearby.
-
Always enjoy this park -

7/21/2011 Little Black State Forest by loyd e brown
good hunting - good roads, nice river, easy access, public archery range
Our favorite park - My family loves it here! It has a lot of space to spread out and things for us to do.
Shooting Range Review - Nice outdoor shooting range with three different distances to shoot. Park provided target backing, should bring own targets and attaching mechanism. 8 to 10 cement rests with seat. No shade so be prepared to deal with the sun. Creek near entrance of park can make it impossible to reach the gun range after heavy rains.
one of my favorite places to camp - very clean and friendly....not as noisy as some you go to
- My favorite place to camp and boat.

4/17/2011 Ha Ha Tonka State Park by chromesparkle
you gotta see this place - its a great place to exercise and see the beauty of the natural world. everyone should be so lucky to live near a place like this.

4/11/2011 Sam A Baker State Park by Buschgang
Best Kept Secret - My friends and I have been going to Sam A. twice a year for the last 20 years. There have been a greart many changes over the last ten years since Mike and Jody took over. Many of the Cabins have been re-modeled over the last couple of years and the food and service have improved greatly in the Restaurant. It has become increasingly more difficult to get reservations over the last five years due to the Parks new found Popularity.
- I loved your park very much I always love to do things with my family ive been on other hicking trails with my family but this was far the best one i look foword to visiting your park this summer when the weather is warmer and we can swim
Beautiful - Camping was peaceful, beautiful, clean, and quiet. Loved camping by the river.
2/21/2011 Big Spring State Park by brittney kreitel

1/17/2011 Weston Bend State Park by tnthead
Family fun - Our family often goes to the park for the outstanding hiking trails. For the first time, we went with snow on the ground. It was beautiful! It was really neat to see the different animal tracks left in the snow and see the ice floating down the river. It was a great experience.
One of our favorite get-aways - We live close by so go several times a year, use the camping facilities, fish, hike and enjoy our kids and grandkids. It is a great family get away for all ages..
12/6/2010 Mingo National Wildlife Refuge by Dr Raymond Schep
Ivory-billed Woodpecker, Gone forever. - Although most wildlife came back when the swamp was restored, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker did not come back.
12/5/2010 Harry S Truman State Park by Sandman 47 Nixa, Mo
love the park, but very disappointed - just returned home from hstp, visit was good until the last day at checkout and found all dump station valves locked. nobody around, called sheriffs office, a nice lady found someone that said they could not be opened up. this upset me greatly. why were we not told this, or the area closed off with barricades? charging full price for limited services is not right in my mind, what do you think? we drove 20 miles out of our way and paid to empty our tanks. doubt we will return anytime soon!
12/1/2010 Big Oak Tree State Park by Tom Robison
great place to view old growth trees - nice area to hike in plus a boardwalk thru a wet area. lots of hugh trees although the big ice storm of 09 did extensive damage including dethroning the National Champion Swamp Chestnut Oak. the State Champion Bur Oak is a sight to see
11/5/2010 Babler State Park by James Gilliam
Babler State Park - when i was a kid i was locked up here in a program they have since otlawed for its cruel impact on kids.....
VERY NICE - Great campgrounds, scenic trails, enjoyed the stay, will be back. Stayed in the Yurt, a very unique structure.
10/17/2010 Sam A Baker State Park by gigifrey
Not meeting possible potential. - This park should be a great park but falls short! It has a great biking trail, hiking trails, nice lay out of the sites. However, the camp host responsibilities fell short! They noticed right away that we didnt register but the bathrooms were so grossly dirty and unkept & the toilets did not flush good at all so maintenance was being neglected.. I had to press and hold down about 5 - 7 times for the same flush to go down. the noise ordinance was not upheld after 10pm. there was a alot of noise allowed until the early morning hours making sleep very difficult. Rowdy tenants were not dealt with. The hot & cold water controls in the showers were hooked up backwards because red was cold and blue was warm. SO much potential for this to be A-1 site but not making the mark.
10/16/2010 Ha Ha Tonka State Park by david
Great hiking trails! - My wife and I have now hiked every trail at Ha Ha Tonka and are ready to go back and do it again. Some totally amazing scenery! Favorite trail is Turkey Pen Hollow. Trails are well marked!
my stay at montauk - we always enjoy staying at montauk the fishing is great we go about 2 times a year such a great place
10/3/2010 Ha Ha Tonka State Park by Earl and Carolyn
Awesome - Our 1/4 mile hike turned into a 2 hour hike, had to see more by going the extra few feet/steps. Already planning our return trip in a couple of weeks when the colors start changing, interesting place to see with each new season.
9/23/2010 Mingo National Wildlife Refuge by Destuney
Very Interesting Place - When we went we were able to see fish, frogs, turkeys, and had a baby deer walk right up to our truck. did not see any eagles :( but had a fun time with nature.
9/20/2010 Johnson Shut-Ins State Park by darrene
Wonderful Campground - We took our kids there camping for the first time after they open back up. Love the location of the campground. The staff was very friendly. The campground was spotless along with the bathrooms. We will be coming back more now. Highly recommend a trip to this state park.

Great for Personal Watercraft - A nice place to launch your Seadoo, Wave Runner or Jetski. Many miles of coastline to explore.
Amazing - We live in Iowa, and went there to see it and was so amazing and breath taking. I would go back to see it again.
8/15/2010 Weston Bend State Park by roland craig
Excellent - Nicely maintained, Beautiful scenic views, variety of activities. I have been visiting for years. Its reassuring to see that some of my tax dollars are going for something I consider worthy and satisfying. Excellent family resource. Its yours and its free - so enjoy it.
8/11/2010 Sam A Baker State Park by Roy
Disapointed - We were very disapointed with our stay in July 2010. The bathroons were dirty and the showers were always cold, even if the park had only a few campers. There were cobwebs and spiders in every corner and the floor was muddy and slick. They told us it was because of cutbacks in funding, well we are still paying $20 a night!
7/30/2010 Big Spring State Park by The Linsons
family tradition - we go every year to canoe on the current river and on our way down we stop by Big Spring. Its a beautiful place to visit and our kids love it. We recently got engaged while visiting the spring so now it will always be special to us.
7/27/2010 Table Rock State Park by Wildrose
Beautiful park! Great view of the lake! - We stayed two nights at the campground. The only disturbance during the night came from the squirrels. The people in the park office were very helpful as were the campground hosts. The park gave us easy access to Silver Dollar City and Branson!!!
7/25/2010 Bennett Spring State Park by A. Davis
- Very nice nature center. Kids loved the trails. An inexpencive outing for the grandkids.
7/21/2010 Big Spring State Park by lizno88

6/21/2010 Elephant Rocks State Park by micheal
- It looks fun
6/20/2010 Bennett Spring State Park by jmarkle
love this place - We love bennett springs. we actually got married in the park. it is very relaxing and peaceful. we will continue coming here every summer!!
6/11/2010 Finger Lakes State Park by PinkMoonCow
Nice Place But Needs Maintenance - Would be alot better if the overgrowth on the trails were maintained. Also if you decide to ride here, have good condition mud terrain tires, if you have balding tires then you will do more fighting with the bike and wear yourself out, the trails are usually slick, or muddy....so be prepared.
SWIMMING - My family used to swim at Trail of Tears State Park all the time. We where visiting the area yesterday and noticed the no swimming posted WHAT HAPPENED?
Great local camping - I have been coming here for the last 25 years and it is in great shape. I love the campgrounds! They are clean and the bathrooms are top notch. The fishing needs to improve, but it is a great place for some weekend fun.
5/31/2010 Elephant Rocks State Park by tiffany
Great Family Fun! - my husband and his siblings used to go here all the time as kids with their parents. when i moved here with him I went for the first time and fell in love with beautiful formations. now my husband and I take our son here. its a great place to establish family traditions.
- Nice natural setting with some archaeological information presented. Is very quiet and gives the visitor a nice experience.
One of the best - Best all around park I have stayed at. Clean park with lots to do with family.
a little peace - The Saline Creek is the perfect place to find a little peace in this hectic world. I always feel a bit better when I leave.
5/2/2010 Saint Francois State Park by campingmama
My new Favorite - Just got back from a wonderful weekend at St. Francois. Our campsite backed to the woods and a scenic path down to the Big River...our own access..and gorgeous. The Swimming Deer trail was awesome. Very clean shower houses, minimum mud and dust...mostly grassy! Overall great park!
4/22/2010 Roaring River State Park by RUSS
NICE NICE NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!! - We go every year this place is nice nice nice.WE LOVE IT.This place is awsome.
Wonderful scenery - Our grandchildren love this park! You can hike the trails, picnic or fish and have a great time.
No Swimming - What happeded to the lake? Last time we visited we loved the lake to swim in. Please fix the problem
very quiet and out in the middle of no w - Seems to be very little traffic in this park as it is out in the middle of no where. Great fishing, nice gravel roads, but easy to go the wrong way! Trail map http://www.mdc.mo.gov/documents/area_brochures/6214map.pdf
Boardwalk trails are GREAT - There are a variety of trails but since Missouri is a swamp most of the time due to rain/snow, poor drainage only the boardwalk trail is worth the trouble most of the time. Its a triangle pattern that takes you through what a lot of Missouri USED to be like before it became border to border farm. Well worth the visit, nice RV park and other facilities.
3/29/2010 Big Spring State Park by loving old times
Great place to take family for weekend - I have very many fond memories of this place as we went at least twice a month camping and one week a year for vacation.. we had a ball camping, swimming and floating current river...
3/24/2010 Bennett Spring State Park by Tom
Great fishing! - Been going 30+ years. You must expect it to be crowded on weekends because its the best park in Missouri, but well worth it to me. I have met and fished with many friends there. It is near impossible to get a room or camp site without planning way ahead. The park is clean and beautiful, with hiking camping fishing and canoeing, and plenty to do in Lebanon, Lake of the Ozarks, Springfield and Branson, which are all within a reasonable driving distance, as well as three other trout parks!
Awesome park - Expect us back for more visits!!!...loved it.
My Grandpa Ted had a dream. - Why is it that there is no info on what Ted Shanks did to contribute to the wild life area? I am so sad his memory is forgotten.
Not for those afraid of heights! - Beautiful fall foliage, good hiking, site seeing, and bird watching.
1/7/2010 Babler State Park by from Chicago
Clean and neat. - A clean and neat place to stay. Open campsites.
1/6/2010 Bennett Spring State Park by Mary

the track - the track is a great place for everyone from little kids to adults to ride its so much fun because you can get the feeling of being a racer
12/15/2009 Big Spring State Park by OliannaEngland
Very beautful and Romantic setting - My fiance and I are hoping to have our wedding there this fall. We visited shortly after we got together and now every summer on our way to go floating we always make a stop there to enjoy memories and the amazingly beautifull sites. The water is such a gorgeous shade of blue and it would make for the perfect back drop to our ceremony. He really enjoys the caves, am very much looking forward to starting our life together and I think next to the spring where it is the beginning of so much would be very symbolic and romantic.
12/1/2009 Babler State Park by campingnuts

11/6/2009 Babler State Park by Paul

Great place to gather - My husband and kids love the park for a number of reasons. The park is clean, safe, everyone is friendly and helpful. The water is great for swimming and fishing. I recommend Sam A Baker to everyone. Our friends and family love it.
10/28/2009 Montauk State Park by CallIt
Grounds beautiful, Cabin needs update - Cabin 20 overrun by ladybugs which dropped on me at night. Bath sink cracked, dirty. Bath moldy, spattered, wood rot. No TV, internet, coffee pot. Grounds beautiful.
10/28/2009 Bennett Spring State Park by Love to fish
Still the same - I went back to Bennett with a family member this last week. He wanted to get some fly fishing in before the end of the season. It is a very non-friendly place. This trip will be the last one I will take to Bennett. I think others should think about boycotting this park until the park staff improves and the good old boy system is gone.
10/26/2009 Ha Ha Tonka State Park by Robin
it was so enjoyable - I have lived in Missouri for 28 years and I went there this fall for the first time and it was amazing. the walk ways are clean and in great shape, very well taking care of and I took so many wonderful fall pictures.Iam already planning my next trip there.
10/20/2009 Ha Ha Tonka State Park by Mark & Marguerite Schleer
Nice scenery - Wonderful views and interesting natural features. However, the restrooms are atrocious!
10/17/2009 Bennett Spring State Park by cool bear
to crowed-camp host are clickish - I have gone to Bennett a few times. The staff is not polite at all. They think we are a bother to them. I over heard the staff say that it will be nice when the campers leave. Are we not the reason they have jobs? . The dinning lodge food is way to expensive. The fish are terrible to eat. I would avoid this place.
10/11/2009 Ha Ha Tonka State Park by Kevin

Birth Place - When I was adopted this is where my new parents picked me up some 47 years ago. Ive visited every year since.. Most relaxing place I know.
9/21/2009 Ha Ha Tonka State Park by Gile
A lot to explore!!! - Unlike a lot of state parks, HaHaTonka has a theme. Historical and natural. You can do the basic trails, and some of the side trails have interesting destinations. Beware of the field of rattlesnakes.
Relaxing and close to KC - Carolyn, one of the hosts was extremely nice and helpful. She even gave my wife and I cooking oil for our popcorn popper.

7/1/2009 Bennett Spring State Park by Relaxing with the family
Great place to relax and enjoy the Famil - We have family reunions about every 2 years and really enjoy the fishing and canoeing. We also enjoy the swim pool and childrens playground area. I would recomend the quiet shaded park to all who want a nice quiet few days or week.
history thats still there - people who have past throw there in there day
BIG MOUTH BASS - I was there over the weekend of 6-19 thru 6-21 2009. The bass fishing was excellent and the quality and quantity was very well. I probably caught and released over 50 to 60 pounds on saturday and sunday morning, two over 8 pounds. :] :] So by this I want to thank the parks people for taking such great care of the lake. The brush piles are in the right places and it makes great fishing. The only sore comment I have is,I sure wish I could get my own boat back on there again someday. But I do make do with the boats you provide and I HIGHLY appreciate you letting us use them.So thanks again and keep up the good work.I drive a chevy silverado, black, with a skeeter sticker in the back glass.Hope to see you all again soon.Have a good day!!!! :] :] :]

Peacefull, Very Clean, and Beautiful - This park is a great place to bring your family. Everyone from the visitors to the employees where friendly. It is very big and can accomodate a simple bank fishing venture or taking the boat out with the family and dropping a line. Right around the corner in Kirksville makes this easy to access anytime.

5/17/2009 Mark Twain National Forest by Jiaan B
Mark Twain Nat. Forest - I have lived right by Mark Twain National Forest, here in Ripley County, Missouri for almost 16 years. I love it here, it is a very scenic area. Very rural and quiet. I think our area needs to be visited more. People need to come visit the Ozark Foothiils. And the Current River, wow, it is so beautiful. I have lived by it almost all of those 16 years. I can see it right now out the window of my house. Great for fishing, canoeing, tubing, etc etc.
Awesome! - Awesome!
my favorite place ever - Majestic is a good discription. I have been going since I was a kid and now my kids have there memories. There was a flood there a couple years ago that took out trees ,houses and the campgrounds but with hard work it was opened to the public with in a year. Breath taking and lots of fun need to have little ones in lifejackets
5/13/2009 Lake of the Ozarks State Park by Jeanie

One of my favorite Parks - I have been coming to the park for a very long time. From being a kid to an adult. I still love coming here and now I get to show my friends this excellent park. I love this park.
We like to go there an ride our horses - We like to go there and ride our horses and camp out, and it has good trails. We would like to know if there is a map of all the trails there and how do we get one?
5/8/2009 Wallace State Park by Jay S.
Best camping in northern missouri... - Fantastic for kids and parents alike. Secluded, peaceful, and clean. Tons of activities including nature walks, fishing, swiming, stargazing, etc.
Amazing Beauty - I have been going up to Weston Bend for over a year now. I live in Gladstone and find that going up their to hike all through the year to be a spiritual experience,This is a beautiful hidden gem right here in our own back yard. The views of the river any time of year are inspiring not to mention beautiful
A Must See for Everyone ! - My parents used to take my sister and I as kids, and now I am doing the same thing some 30 years later. Whether you go for the history of the mining process, to explore and climb on the mountains of granite, search for tad-poles in the small pools of water that form on the rocks, or just go for the sheer beauty of it, Elephant Rocks is a must see for every child and adult alike.

3/14/2009 Stockton State Park by jkb
What quiet, serene beauty! - This to me is so much better vacationing than at other overcrowded and commercialized areas. It is so quiet and beautiful. The fishing is out of this world. There are cabins at the park as well as outside the park in case they are full. I enjoyed every moment. No crowds, no trash, just peaceful outdoors. Swimming, fishing and boating. What a joy.
great park - Beautiful state park. Very peaceful. Nice accomodations. We go back several times each year. Highly recommended. Quiet. This is a sailing lake.
A life-long favorite - Whether in the campground, cabins, motel or just a day-trip we have never failed to have a great time at Meramec State Park. They have canoe rentals, a camp store, restaurant, places to splash around on the riverbank and many other activities.
2/23/2009 Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge by Stephen and Annette
A wonderful day trip into a wetland - Thoousands of Geese, a hundred or so of Eagles, Ducks of many kinds, deer, and much more to be viewed from your car on a driving tour. We take the grand kids to view Eagele Days in January. The rest of the year a day trip to get out and take pictures. A state park is nearby to camp (or stayt at a cabin). Great restraunt. Stephen and Annette from St. Joseph, Missouri
For the birds - This is a good area to visit to see birds, especially during migration times. There will, if you happen on the right days, be thousands of ducks and/or geese of varying types. Others you will see are herons, egrets, eagles although these are not exclusive to migration periods. There are also a lot of song birds. It is a decent stream and small lake fishing area. There is also a neaby access to the Mississippi. Hiking is mostly open gravel road walking and on levees when permitted. Be forwarned, if planning to hike/walk/car tour make sure the area is open to that activity during duck, goose, and deer seasons.
neat - The museum is relatively small, but packed full of interesting items. The trail was beautiful and an easy hike (even for me when I was 7 months pregnant). The kids loved it, but I wish there was more to see and do. We should have taken the time to go on a day they had one of their special events. A must see if you will be in the area.
2/5/2009 Thousand Hills State Park by Okies from Shawnee

youth hunt - My son and I have never seen deer like that, or seen as many deer and geese. Getting the youth involved in this was a great idea, keep it up........
11/17/2008 Graham Cave State Park by Alan and Hazel from Pittsburgh
A fascinating place - The cave was huge and mysterious, and the explanatory displays were clear and helpful. The park staff members were extremely friendly and helpful.
11/15/2008 Hawn State Park by Medfly
So Many Memories - All water here seeks the Mississippi. Water has for many hundred million years carved the rocks of Eastern Missouri into fantastic and delicate shapes. Nowhere will you see that more dramatically displayed than at Hawn. Oh, yeah. We had a hellacious rock concert there in 1975.
11/6/2008 Van Meter State Park by Sarah
Fantastic, not-overly crowded Park - Beautiful trails and a lack of crowds make this the perfect outing for a day.
amazing - There are little gems close to home
An Awesome Experience - I learned to ride better than most guys here because you get extremely experienced on all types of terrain. The trails are amazing, some easy, some are fun because they are really tight and rough!
10/16/2008 Harry S Truman State Park by C.A. and Kathi
We loved our visit there - We were very fond of the 3 camphost couples. But unfortunately, we did not get their last names and phone numbers or email addresses or if we did we can not locate them and we would love to contact them. The campsites and amenities were great and all 3 of the couples who volunteered there were friendly and even fed us a catfish lunch.
My dad pulls hogs out all the time .. - Big fish severe snag fishing environment but fish outweight the hassels. Killer park that is dormant 5 months a year for the Duck dudes.
10/8/2008 Lester R Davis Memorial State Forest by Lanny Ackiss
An undiscovered gem - Having just discovered this patch of forest a few days ago, I write with enthusiasm but little knowledge. Land mined long ago was forested by Lester Davis some 70 years past resulting in woods not native by any means, but “lovely, dark, and deep.” There are over 50 species of trees and shrubs. Literally across the road from restored and native prairie at Prairie State Park, this man-made forest afforded a interesting walk. Two great horned owls were booming on either side of us, and we happened upon a turkey vulture roost with many dozens of the birds settling down for twilight - more than I have ever seen at once. There are three miles of trails, and I plan on returning to explore further.

8/24/2008 Hawn State Park by franski
We never get tired of Hawn - Pristine trails. When you get into the second loop trail you cannot hear any traffic, except an occasional airplane. You can imagine what it must have been like to be one of the first to see it.

7/15/2008 Saint Joe State Park by Marb
Something for everyone - One of the best ATV parks I have ever found. From very technical wooded trails to wide open sand flats and long winding sand trails, St Joe is perfect for riders of all skill levels. Its so large its hard to get crowded. (over 2000 acres for off road vehicles) Nice lakes for fishing/swimming. Great campground.
Interesting - I had no idea there was a such a place. The maze was fun and the formations were interesting. I was glad there is a paved path around the entire site (not very long) that I can bring my mother in her wheel chair to enjoy.
7/13/2008 Big Spring State Park by Steven
My favorite place in Missouri - I was born in Missouri, my father helped build the Big Springs State Park while he was in the C.C.C. Corps, along with some of his friends. I was told that there is a picture in the museum-store, there at the park, of all the people that helped build the park, when they were in the C.C.C. Corps. I would like to see if I can get a print of it, to send to my Mother, as it should have my Father in it, and he pasted away in 1987. There were six boys in my family, and every Labor Day Week End, Dad would say, where do you boys want to go, and it was always , Big Springs State Park. Four of us learned to swim in the Current River.
ONE MAN,s Favorit Park -

6/20/2008 Big Spring State Park by kmpnn76
It is all at your finger tips! - Yes, the fun does not stop there. The kayaking and flowing down the lazy river is the best. It is the first time experianed that welecomes the best at heart. We would like to meet others for a day on the river. Food snacks and canned soadas for a start.
Fishing is mediocre at best - I have fished there several times. Many different baits and have taken the boat there. It is an Electric motor only no gas lake. Fishing is at best mediocre. The park is very clean and nice though.
6/16/2008 Weston Bend State Park by rlemon
Nice hiking trails - We took a pleasant 1 mile hike and we saw a fair to middling view of the Missouri river.
Very Nice... Well Kept... - I was most pleased by the cleanliness of the park, this is an all around amazing place to visit- the view from the Castle ruins is spectacular. Some of the trails are definitely for the physically fit- or for the avid hiker ...
Great Family Park - EXCELLENT biking path - paved and flat. Many access spots to Big Creek/St. Fracois River with crystal clear water. Kept very clean.

5/4/2008 Ben Cash Memorial State Wildlife Area by Last Great Place Near Kennett
sad - Ben Cash used to be a great place to camp and take your kids fishing. It needs some serious clean up and updating. It is barley accessable anymore. You can't go up and down the levees to the bar pits anymore. I grew up catching some great fish there. From the levee at 84 all the way to where the levee ended at the point, you cant even get there anymore with all the gates. PLEASE HELP!
Great fishing lake - This is a quiet relaxing area with good fishing in the lake and also the many ponds. The camp grounds are well kept but primeative.
