Delaware Parks Visitor Reviews
Beware of sand fleas!!! - We camped at this park one night and now I regret it. We were itching all night long and once morning arrived, our poor kids were covered in little red bite marks. These bites are now raised and very itchy. I was told that these are from sand fleas. We will not be camping at the beach ever again! Also, our site was right near the smelly dumpsters, the highway, and there were NO trees.

A+ - Our family has visited many times, by road and boat, and always love the quiet natural surroundings and many, many birds. The crabbing and fishing is good and is now enjoyed by our grandkids as well as our adult kids! The watch tower is a favorite during fall/wintertime waterfowl migration. Highly recommend!
Not Good at all!! - Very dirty pool. It may be cheap, but not worth the money!
Bird photo opportunities in mid June - Opportunities for bird photography are fairly good, but not as great as as at Assateague, further south.
sand fleas - camped in tent site area. thought mosquitoes were biting but heard no buzzing. discovered from other campers next am that it was sand fleas. child looked like he had chicken pox and was even asked by another tourist if so.

Unique experience - Since I was a little girl,I have visited the island. Now we recommend for everyone to take the ferry and enjoy this unique historical fort. A place for all ages that really brings history to life. Worth the trip.

- The park is in great need of dedicated volunteers that can help us with maintenance of trails,(reporting downed trees, unsafe conditions) the disc golf course, campground,Nature Center staffing,Park Watch, etc. Check out www.destateparks.com for information on volunteering.

Great Park - The lake the park is named for is absolutely beautiful. There are also free barbeques and boat rentals. If you choose a barbeque by the lake, there are plenty of trees and a decent amount of privacy. Camping is also great, although there is little cover if it rains.

Beautiful Woodland Trails - My husband travels to Delaware on business and I like to travel with him. We stay in a dog friendly hotel. My dog Louie and I have discovered the beautiful wooded trails of Killens Pond. You can walk and walk for hours without ever coming upon another person and if you do meet someone they will give you a friendly smile and hello and go on as they too are enchanted by the woodland beauty.

My favorite park in Delaware. - The different tracts offer a good variety of easy hiking with both short and moderate lengths. The camp areas offered are pretty good and the Forestry Officers are friendly, informative and willing to work with you if you want to stay overnight or have fires. The planted pine forests are really awesome. And the variety of wildlife that can be observed is really excellent. I have not found it a heavily used area so you are more likely to find some solitude here then at other parks like Lums Pond which has been a real disappointment the last few years. You cannot access a fair amount of the hiking trails in the park during firearm hunting season, and for good reason, so make sure you check online or at the office to discover the exact dates of the season.
Excellent bird watching! - A great area for wildlife observation, espectially of the avion kind. The variety of birds is amazing. It is at its best during migratory periods and so it is worth researching when the birds come through. If you are into birding this area will not disappoint.

Generally a disappointment. - They have extended the fee periods to get more money, but do not seem to be using it to maintain the park. The bathrooms, though plentiful are usually filthy and the picnic areas are in disrepair. There are just too many people in the park to enjoy it, especially if you are like me and want to have a little solitude of some sort. I have also found that the trails are not maintained well at all and there is no enforcement for keeping mountianbikers and horses off of the hiker only sections. Many of the trail markers are broken or unreadable and if a tree falls on the trail expect it to remain there for far too long.

Very Clean and a Friendly Park - I do have a concern as to not being able to check in until 1:00. When the lot is empty and you have paid for that lot. Then you should be able to check in at 8:00 when your store opens. I can see if someone is on that lot from the night before and you have to rake it. But if that is empty from the night before why not let the camper check in. After all you are paying for the entire day and only getting from 1:00 on.
Quiet waters, pine woods, BIRDS - Long stretches of marsh grashes line the bay shores, surrounded by pine woods. A quiet park well worth the visit as a real contrast to the nearby ocean beaches. Many, many birds.
