Old Erie Canal State Park is a 36-mile stretch of the 363-mile Old Erie Canal, which has been designated a National Recreational Trail by the National Parks Service. The terrain is woodland and wetland that present opportunities for hiking, picnicking, horseback riding, bicycling, canoeing, fishing, and snowmobiling. Several areas have footbridges that aid access to the canal towpath where visitors can view the remnants of stone aqueducts.

This park offers reservable picnic shelters at Cedar Bay Picnic Areas. Cedar Bay Park is operated under a cooperative agreement with the Town of Dewitt.
Boating
The park offers a variety of boating options for visitors. Canoeing and kayaking are popular activities, with the calm waters providing an ideal environment for beginners as well as experienced paddlers. The canal is also suitable for small motorized boats. However, it's important to note that there aren't any boat rental facilities within the park itself so visitors need to bring their own equipment.
Fishing
Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy the calm waters, home to species like largemouth bass and northern pike. The park's waterway also hosts bluegill, pumpkinseed sunfish, yellow perch and carp. Anglers may fish from shore or boat for a relaxing day out in nature.

Bicycling
Biking is a popular activity, with 36 miles of trails available. Be aware that terrain varies from flat to hilly.

The park's towpath trail offers an easy ride for beginners and families. However, always stay alert for pedestrians.

Mountain biking enthusiasts can explore off-road paths but should be cautious due to uneven surfaces and potential obstacles.

Remember: helmets are required by law in New York State for cyclists under the age of 14 years old.

Cycling after dark isn't recommended as there aren't any lights along the trails; bring your own if necessary.

Always check weather conditions before setting out on your bike - wet or icy pathways could pose risks.

Ensure you have water supplies during summer months when temperatures rise significantly causing dehydration risk while cycling long distances.

Respect wildlife encountered on routes - keep distance & avoid disturbing them which might lead into unexpected situations

Lastly, remember it's important not only enjoy yourself but also respect other visitors' experiences too!
Birding
The park offers birdwatching opportunities with a variety of species including waterfowl, songbirds and raptors. Birders can explore the 36-mile trail that runs along the canal for sightings. The diverse habitats within this area attract different types of birds throughout the year.
