The wooded hills and scenic valleys of the Dillon area offer a picturesque setting for outdoor adventure. Whether boating the quiet coves and inlets of the lake or hiking the forest trails, Ohio's rural hill country provides an outstanding recreational experience at Dillon State Park.
Nature of the Area
Dillon State Park in Muskingum County is situated in an area of the state that possesses diverse and unique natural features. One of which is the presence of the Black Hand Sandstone. Sand, eroded hundreds of millions of years ago from mountains farther east, accumulated in a vast delta in the sea covering the region. This hard bedrock erodes to form sheer cliffs and supports a hardwood forest.

The rolling, reverting farmland of the Dillon area provides visitors the opportunity to see some of Ohio's most magnificent wildlife. White-tailed deer, ruffed grouse and wild turkey can be seen by quiet observers. During migration, numerous species of waterfowl visit Dillon's waters. Most recently, sightings of bald eagles have been reported.
History of the Area
Dillon State Park is a recreational area located in Nashport, Ohio, encompassing 2,285 acres of land. The park surrounds the 1,360-acre Dillon Reservoir, which was created in 1958 by the construction of a dam on the Licking River.

The history of Dillon State Park dates back to the early 19th century when the area was settled by European immigrants. The land was initially used for agriculture, and several farmsteads were established in the region. In the mid-20th century, plans were made to construct a reservoir for flood control purposes and to provide a water supply for the City of Zanesville.

The construction of the Dillon Dam began in 1957 and was completed in 1958. The dam, measuring 73 feet high and 750 feet long, created Dillon Reservoir, which quickly became a popular recreational spot due to its scenic beauty and opportunities for boating, fishing, and camping.

In 1959, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources acquired the surrounding land to establish Dillon State Park. The park was officially opened to the public in 1961 and has since attracted visitors from both locals and tourists due to its diverse offerings.

Dillon State Park has undergone several developments and improvements. Facilities such as campgrounds, hiking trails, picnic areas, and fishing spots have been added to enhance visitors' experiences. The park is also known for its wildlife, including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and various bird species.

Dillon State Park remains a highly regarded recreational destination in Ohio, providing opportunities for outdoor activities such as boating, fishing, swimming, hiking, and biking. Its rich history, natural beauty, and range of amenities continue to draw visitors to the park, making it an integral part of Ohio's state park system.

Fishing
Dillon State Park in Ohio offers a variety of fishing opportunities for both novice and experienced anglers. The park's centerpiece, Dillon Lake, is well-stocked with several species of fish including largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish.

The lake spans over 1,376 acres providing ample space for boat-based or shore-side angling. There are two marinas available within the park that offer boating access to the water as well as bait shops where you can purchase necessary supplies.

In addition to traditional rod-and-reel fishing methods on Dillon Lake itself; fly-fishing enthusiasts may also enjoy exploring Licking River which runs through parts of the state park offering chances at catching trout among other species.

Fishing tournaments are often held throughout warmer months attracting competitive fishermen from around region while winter ice fishing becomes popular when conditions allow it safely.

Picnicking

Two shelters available on a first-come, first-served basis, are located at the overlook area and beach. A boater's picnic area with well water and vault-type latrines is located on the lake.
Bicycling
For cycling enthusiasts, the park offers a 7-mile mountain bike trail. Be aware it's challenging and hilly.

The Blackberry Trail is another option for less experienced riders but still requires caution due to uneven terrain.

Remember that helmets are mandatory on all trails in order to ensure safety while biking around this area.

It's also important not to venture off marked paths as unmarked areas may contain hazards or be environmentally sensitive zones.

Please note: some trails might close during wet conditions; always check current status before heading out.

Bike rentals aren't available within the park so remember bring your own equipment if you plan on riding here.
Trails
Visitors who enjoy nature study will find that Dillon's trails are pathways to discovery. The Ruffed Grouse Nature Trail is approximately 3/4-mile long and introduces the hiker to the varied habitats of the area. This trial is a branch of the 6-mile long Licking Bend Trail which skirts the lakeshore. Three other fascinating trails--Blackberry Ridge Trail (1 mile), King Ridge Loop (1.1 miles) and Hickory Grove Loop ( 1.5 miles) are located very near the camping and cottage area.
Birding
The park offers a variety of birding opportunities with its diverse habitats including hardwood forests, pine plantations, meadows and wetlands. It is home to numerous species such as the Red-tailed Hawk, Wild Turkey and Pileated Woodpecker. The area around the lake attracts waterfowl like Mallards and Canada Geese while forested areas are ideal for spotting songbirds or owls. Birdwatchers can explore several trails that traverse different ecosystems providing ample chances for sightings throughout all seasons.
Area Attractions
Blackhand Gorge State Nature Preserve is located ten miles northwest of Dillon State Park on Licking County Road 273. Muskingum River State Park, featuring a hand-operated lock system, is headquartered in nearby Zanesville. Further south, off S.R. 60, lies Blue Rock State Park and State Forest. All are just a short drive from the Dillon area.

Around Zanesville, there are a number of attractions that reflect the cultural history of the Dillon region. A ride on the Lorena Sternwheeler docked at the Zanesville Riverside Park is a floating trip into the past. The National Road/Zane Grey Museum in Norwich offers a nostalgic look at life on the early Ohio frontier. Muskingum County is a leader in the production of pottery items, and several potteries offer tours of their facilities.

September 21 Nice Park Helping Staff Quiet Campground by Ron Gaydis
park review stars; one to five Several weeks ago, I made my first trip to Dillion State Park. Not knowing what to expect a welcoming helpful staff of ranger?s, hosts and employees greeted me. I had the opportunity to make new friends while staying at the spacious, quiet campground. I had the pleasure of sharing rides in my Yellow Amphicar and making memories for all my passengers that experienced Vehicular Buoyancy. Thank you to everyone and especially the park officers for welcoming me to their beautiful park and lake.

park review stars; one to five I love this park. i take three kids ages 5, 10 and 12. I always worry about them getting bored. there was plenty for them to do. I tent camp so the heat worried me but 90% of the sites were shaded. The bathrooms were clean (have a 5yr old girl so that matters). I will be be back. Already looking into my next stay.
