Whetstone Gulf State Park is built in and around a three-mile-long gorge cut into the eastern edge of the Tug Hill Plateau. The gorge is one of the most spectacular scenic vistas east of the Rocky Mountains. The park has 56 wooded campsites some of which are electric, a scenic picnic area along Whetstone Creek, a man-made swimming area and trails for hiking and cross-country skiing, one of which circles the gorge. Above the gorge is Whetstone Reservoir, stocked with tiger muskie and large-mouth bass for fishermen, and popular for canoeing.
Swimming
1. Whetstone Gulf State Park offers a designated swimming area in its man-made lake.
2. Lifeguards are on duty during summer months for safety.
3. Swimming is only allowed when lifeguards are present, typically from late June through Labor Day.
4. The park provides changing rooms and restrooms near the beach area for swimmers' convenience.
5. There's no additional fee to swim after paying the vehicle entrance fee into the park.

Boating
The park, located in New York, offers various boating options for visitors. Rowboat rentals are available during the summer season at a reasonable cost. Additionally, there is also an option to bring your own boat and use it on the lake within certain restrictions set by the park authorities.
Fishing
Enjoy fishing in a serene environment with options for shore and boat angling. Species include trout, bass, and pike. The park's creek is also home to brook trout. Ice fishing is available during winter months on the reservoir.

Picnicking
Whetstone Gulf State Park offers scenic picnic areas with tables and grills. Shelters are available for rent, accommodating larger groups.
Bicycling
Biking enthusiasts should tread carefully as there are no designated biking trails within this park. The terrain can be challenging, with steep inclines and rocky paths that may not suit all skill levels. It's important to note the absence of bike rental facilities on-site, so visitors must bring their own equipment if they wish to cycle around the area.

While cycling is permitted along public roads running through the park, these routes often have heavy traffic which could pose a risk for less experienced riders or children. Always wear appropriate safety gear when riding in such conditions.

In summary: while it's possible to enjoy some casual bicycling here; due caution is advised given potential challenges and risks involved.

Visitor Comments, Memories and Reviews
August 8 Great Experience by M&D Niles
park review stars; one to five This park was a great find. The hike was only 3 miles but with the changes in elevation it was about 3 hours long. We will be back to do that hike again, and maybe check out other parts of the park as well.
June 30 Little known secret
