Mount Nebo State Forest and Game Preserve is located in Cecil County, Maryland, within the northeastern region of the state. Its history can be traced back to the early 20th century.
In the early 1900s, the state of Maryland recognized the importance of preserving forests and natural areas for their ecological significance and recreational value. As a result, the state government started acquiring land for the establishment of state forests and parks.
In 1930, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) purchased approximately 1,828 acres of land in the Elk Neck area to create the Mount Nebo State Forest. The primary purpose of this acquisition was to protect the forested land and its natural resources, including the diverse wildlife species that called the area home.
Over the years, the state forest was expanded, and by the 1960s, it reached its current size of around 3,200 acres. During this time, efforts were made to manage the forest sustainably, keeping in mind the principles of conservation and biodiversity preservation.
The Mount Nebo State Forest also has a designated area known as the Game Preserve. This section, consisting of about 600 acres, remains relatively undisturbed and is managed specifically for wildlife habitat conservation. It provides an essential sanctuary for numerous species, including white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and various songbird populations.
In recent years, the state forest and game preserve have become popular destinations for outdoor recreation. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking, birdwatching, hunting (during designated seasons), and nature photography.
Mount Nebo State Forest and Game Preserve continues to serve as a vital ecological and recreational asset in Cecil County, preserving Maryland's natural beauty and supporting diverse wildlife populations.
