MILL CREEK STATE PARK
Forget the crazy commercial resorts. If you head just east of Paullina in O'Brien County, you'll hit Mill Creek Park, 158 acres of low-key outdoor fun that locals guard like a secret. It really works. You can pitch a tent, hook up an RV, or rent one of their six full-service cabins if you hate sleeping on the hard ground. The 33-acre lake stays busy. You'll see kids throwing cannonballs off the swim dock, families paddling kayaks, and anglers pulling crappie out of the water near the timber line.
It isn't just for summer. So when the Iowa temperature drops, people drag ice fishing huts out onto the frozen lake or hike the paved trail through the trees. Great for a quick mental reset. Plus, they built a huge timber lodge you can rent for gatherings, which beats cramming twenty relatives into your living room. Pack a cooler and head down.
