Near the site of the battle of Fallen Timbers, this small park contains a monument honoring Major General Anthony Wayne as well as smaller monuments to the soldiers and Native Americans who died in the battle.
The battle of Fallen Timbers on 20 August 1794, was decisive in bringing the Indians of the Northwest Territory to sign the Treaty of Greene Ville. By this treaty the Indians ceded southern and eastern Ohio to settlers. This brief battle, an overwhelming victory for Wayne's forces, was fought in an area recently ravaged by a windstorm, hence the name Fallen Timbers.
The Fallen Timbers State Memorial is an important historical site located in Maumee, Ohio. It commemorates the Battle of Fallen Timbers, a significant event in American history that took place on August 20, 1794.
At the time, the Northwest Territory (which included present-day Ohio) was a contested area between Native American tribes and United States settlers. The battle was the climax of years of conflict between these two groups, specifically the confederacy of Native American tribes known as the Western Confederacy, led by the Shawnee Chief Blue Jacket, and the United States' forces commanded by General Anthony Wayne.
General Wayne's objective was to secure the Northwest Territory and defeat the Native American resistance. The Western Confederacy, which included tribes such as the Shawnee, Miami, Lenape, and Ottawa, aimed to resist further encroachment on their lands. The two forces clashed near the Maumee River, on a battlefield that was strewn with fallen trees, hence its name "Fallen Timbers."
The battle lasted for approximately two hours, with General Wayne's forces successfully defeating the Native American warriors. It marked a decisive victory for the United States in securing the Northwest Territory and opening up the area for further settlement.
Following the Battle of Fallen Timbers, the Treaty of Greenville was negotiated and signed in 1795. This treaty ended the Northwest Indian War and established peace between the United States and the various Native American tribes. As part of the treaty, Native American tribes ceded a significant amount of land to the United States, leading to further westward expansion.
The Fallen Timbers State Memorial was established to commemorate this significant battle in American history. The memorial includes a monument and a series of markers that highlight key events of the battle. It serves as a reminder of the conflict between Native Americans and European settlers, as well as the subsequent territorial growth of the United States.
