The wildlife area surrounds the scenic Dillon Reservoir, also known as Dillon Lake, which was constructed in the 1960s by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers for flood control purposes.

The construction of Dillon Reservoir resulted in the flooding of the Licking Valley, creating a large body of water that covers approximately 1,590 acres when full. The land surrounding the reservoir, known as Dillon State Park, was established in 1950 and later expanded to include the wildlife area.
