February 18Too bad the Covered bridge Burned Down by George R. Carlisle.
The red 169-foot covered bridge was burned by vabndals July 3, 1969. The bridge has not yet been replaced, although there has been talk of an 8-foot wide pedestrian only replacement covered bridge. That would help the park a lot. There has not been so much use since the bridge burned; Montebellow ahs been merely n access point to launch boats on the river. A large gravel pile stands in the way; this is used to raise the Route 136 roadway when the river is flooding. Montebello needs to be developed. Space is limited, but it would be nice to have even a small primitive campground (no hookups, but a water faucet and outdoor toilets and fireplaces; if not, there should be at least picnic tables and outdoor toilets.
If some area could be annexed along the Warsaw Great River Road, there might be campgrounds along this road, although they are subject to flooding when the river is high. If the unused portion of the Keokuk Junction Railway, Warsaw Branch, were removed, there might be campsites and They could be close to the highway. Flooding is the main issue. There is camping in nearby Wildcat Springs Park, a hamilton City park.
