The Civilian Conservation Corps Museum documents the efforts to "put Americans back to work" during the Great Depression. The CCC enrolled more than 100,000 young Michigan men to perform a variety of a conservation and reforestation efforts. Between 1933 and 1942, the Michigan CCC planted 484 million trees, spend 140,000 days fighting forest fires and constructed 7,000 miles of truck trails, 504 bridges and 222 buildings. The DNR state park system still carries many examples of their work still in use today.

February 16 Best Park The State Has. by Schmidt
This is the best family park Michigan has. I have been going to South Higgans Lake for over 20 years and im 34. The Firemans Mem. is right down the road from there. The town of Houghton has a ton of family activities. The little town of Roscommon is sweet and have the best canoe livery. Go if you have a chance.
July 20 DNR trouble by Alfonso
Let put it this way. 11pm all music needs to be turned off even if you have the volume at 1 out of 100. I talked louder than the music. Wood 5bucks per bundle. it burns for about hour and half 2 max. bring your own wood. KOA park a mile away was 10x better. you can play music loud even after midnight. Buffet in morning. the best part about higgins park was the walk to the beach. other than that dont dont bother.
May 23 Bad Timing? by wjlw421@aol.com
We stopped there with the specific purpose of touring the CCC Museum..My father worked there and told us many stories of his adventures. His picture is displayed(according to relatives) just inside the door. It was 4th of July weekend and the museum was locked. We went to the park office asked for admittance. They said since it was July 5th, at the time, that we had missed our chance to see the museum. They tried to locate a worker who could let us in for a tour. But, none were available. Imagine that? On a weekend at a state park? I was sorely disapointed. That was four years ago. I have not been able to make the trip since.
April 2 Best Park in Michigan! by Suzie Q - Fenton, MI.
When my children were growing up we went almost weekly and they loved it. Great park for small children, great beach. Not far from Prudenville for things to do if thats what your looking for. Great family camping.
October 4 Response to Tickets on Cars by Mikey NTH
You get the State Park pass at the entrance to the park proper, a little west of the CCC museum and across the road. The nursery remained in use many years after the park was established. There is another state park on the southern shore of Higgins Lake. (My parents have a cottage nearby and I have been to both parks many times.)
May 6 THE CLASSIC CAMPGROUND I LOVE IT by Yerffej280
September 2 Tickets on cars by disappointed visitor August 08
The CCC museum is a very interesting place to visit. Watch out. The sign says a permit is required yet there is no one available to get a permit or obtain a day pass from. The park staff is sitting in the parking lot waiting to put a ticket on your car while you are inside the museum.
July 5 A Park with lots of History by summer visitor
The CCCs museum was very interesting. A real piece of history. It seems with all the success of this Nursery Camp it may be directly responsible for the existance of the rest of the parks in the surrounding Lower Peninsula! The Upland Nature trail was great too.
