Whether seeking solitude, adventure, or a memorable family outing, Wausaukee State Forest promises an unforgettable experience in the heart of Wisconsin's scenic wilderness.
History of the Area
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Wisconsin's forests were extensively logged for timber, resulting in the depletion of much of the original forest cover. Efforts were then made to reforest these cleared lands, and in 1925, the Wisconsin Legislature established the Peshtigo River State Forest, which included the present-day Wausaukee State Forest.

The forest was initially managed for timber production, with tree planting and other reforestation activities taking place. The Peshtigo River, which runs through the forest, was used to transport logs downstream to mills on Green Bay.

In 1971, the Peshtigo River State Forest was divided into two separate management units, and the southern portion was renamed the Wausaukee Wildlife Area. This area was managed primarily for wildlife habitat and recreation, including hunting, fishing, and trapping.
