This quiet site combines the recreational fun of a state park with the educational resources of a historic site. Named after the vice president of the Confederacy and governor of Georgia, A.H. Stephens State Historic Park features a Confederate museum with one of the finest collections of Civil War artifacts in Georgia, including uniforms and documents. Stephens? home, Liberty Hall, is renovated to its 1875 style, fully furnished and open for tours. Beautiful outdoor facilities make this park a treat for both nature lovers and history buffs. The lakeside group camp is a popular location for large overnight gatherings.
History of the Area
Located in Crawfordville, Georgia, the park was established in 1933. It is named after Alexander H. Stephens, vice president of the Confederate States during the American Civil War.

The site originally served as his home and farm from 1845 until his death in 1883. The property includes Liberty Hall - Stephen's restored and furnished mid-19th century house which has been designated a National Historic Landmark since December 2nd,1974.

In addition to its historical significance,the park also offers recreational activities such as camping,hiking,fishing,and horseback riding.It covers an area of over one thousand acres,making it one of Georgia's larger state parks.

Camping
- Tent Camping: Offers 25 tent, trailer and RV campsites with picnic tables, grills and water/electricity hookups.
- Pioneer Campground: A primitive camping area for groups up to 50 people; includes a covered shelter.
- Equestrian Camping: Provides four equestrian sites near horse trails; each site has electricity/water hookup facilities.
- Yurt Rental: Six yurts available featuring furniture inside, fire ring outside along with grill and deck overlooking the lake.
Fishing
The park offers a 22-acre lake for fishing. Anglers can catch largemouth bass, bream, catfish and crappie here. A valid Georgia Fishing License is required to fish in the lake.

Boat ramps are available for those who prefer boat fishing. However, only electric motors are allowed on boats.

Fishing gear rentals such as rods and reels are also provided within the park premises.

Picnicking
A. H. Stephens State Park offers numerous picnic spots with grills, a lake view and covered pavilions for larger groups.

Trails
- Lake Trail: This trail is 1.8 miles long and circles the park's lake, offering scenic views of waterfowl and other wildlife.

- Overland Nature Trail: A short but informative half-mile loop that takes hikers through a variety of ecosystems including hardwood forest, pine stand, wetlands area with interpretive signs along the way.

- Civil War Interpretative Loop: An easy one mile walk which includes historical markers detailing events from Georgia's largest prison camp during the Civil War era.

- Pioneer Campground Trails : These trails are located within campground areas providing access to fishing spots on Alexander Stephens Park Road; length varies depending upon chosen route.

- Horse Creek Wildlife Management Area Trails : Adjacent to state park boundaries these trails offer longer hikes into diverse habitats such as mature forests or alongside creeks; lengths vary up to several miles each.

- Mountain Bike Pathway : Specifically designed for mountain biking this pathway offers challenging terrain over its two-mile course while also accommodating foot traffic.

- Picnic Shelter Walkways : Short pathways leading directly from picnic shelters towards playgrounds or restrooms facilities without specific mileage listed due their brief nature.

Bicycling
Cycling enthusiasts can explore 4 miles of trails, suitable for all skill levels. Helmets are recommended at all times.

The park offers bike rentals if you don't have your own equipment. Always check availability in advance.

Riding after dark is not permitted; plan accordingly to ensure a safe return before sunset.

Stay on designated paths and respect the natural environment by avoiding off-trail biking which may damage local flora or fauna.

Be aware that some areas might be shared with hikers so always maintain an appropriate speed to avoid accidents.

Remember: safety first! Carry water, wear sunscreen and keep emergency contact details handy during rides.

Birding
The park offers birding opportunities with over 80 species of birds to spot, including various songbirds. Birdwatchers can explore the nature trails and participate in annual bird counts or guided tours. The site is part of Georgia's Southern Rivers Birding Trail.

Directions
2 miles north of I-20 off Exit #148 (Hwy. 22). Turn right at the junction of Hwy 22 and Hwy 278. Turn left at the traffic light. Go 2 blocks, turn left, then make an immediate right. Follow signs to park office. If RV is taller than 12' 10", exit at #148 travel 2 miles and go across junction of Hwy 22 and Hwy 278. Turn right onto MLK, Jr. Dr. NW. Go 1 mile , turn left onto Alexander Street. Follow signs to park office.
