ALBERT C LORD STATE FOREST
ALBERT C LORD STATE FOREST
Cavendish, Vermont   05142
(lat:43.4204 lon:-72.5523) map location
Located off Oscarson Road, Lord State Forest is a small parcel of gentle terrain and large white pine trees. Access and parking is limited. It is surrounded by several large private ownerships giving it an expansive feel that belies its size.

Frequent thinnings of high quality pine stands have created a forest of large attractive pines.

Primary uses are hunting it supports a greater number of deer than expected and walking. It is an excellent site for snowshoeing in winter though parking is difficult.
History of the Area
The forest was originally named Montpelier City Forest and was established in 1915 when the City of Montpelier acquired the land to protect the local watershed. At the time, the main purpose of the forest was to safeguard the quality of the drinking water supply for Montpelier's residents.

In the 1930s, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) played a significant role in developing the area. The CCC was a part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal programs and aimed to provide employment to young men during the Great Depression. The CCC workers constructed trails, roads, picnic areas, and firebreaks in the forest, contributing to its recreational and conservation development.

In 1967, the forest was renamed in honor of Albert C. Lord, a journalist, and author, who served as Vermont's State Forester from 1942 to 1958. During his tenure, Lord contributed significantly to the development and expansion of Vermont's state forests.
