History of the Area
- Early History: The land on which Rocky Creek State Forest now stands has a long history of human habitation. Various Native American tribes, including the Osage and Delaware, are known to have inhabited the region for centuries.

- Timber Harvesting: In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area that now comprises Rocky Creek State Forest was heavily logged for its valuable timber resources. The extensive logging operations significantly impacted the forest ecosystem, leading to widespread deforestation and loss of habitat for many native species.

- Forest Restoration: In the mid-20th century, efforts began to restore the logged areas and conserve the remaining forest. The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) played a significant role in this restoration process, acquiring the land and implementing various conservation practices to revive the forest.

- Establishment of Rocky Creek State Forest: In 1982, the MDC officially established Rocky Creek State Forest as a designated state forest. The main goal was to develop the area as a public forest for recreational activities such as hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking, while also ensuring long-term sustainability and protection of the natural resources.

- Forest Management: Since its establishment, Rocky Creek State Forest has been actively managed by the MDC. The forest management practices include selective timber harvesting, prescribed burns, wildlife population control, and other conservation efforts to maintain a healthy ecosystem and promote diverse wildlife habitats.

- Recreational Opportunities: Rocky Creek State Forest offers several recreational opportunities for visitors. It has numerous trails, including the Rocky Creek Trail and the Still Turn Trail, which provide opportunities for hiking and nature observation. The forest also provides hunting and fishing opportunities, particularly for deer, turkey, and small game.
