In 1825, the Cherokee national legislature established a capital called New Echota at the headwaters of the Oostanaula River. During its short history, New Echota was the site of the first Indian language newspaper office, a court case which carried to the U.S. Supreme Court, one of the earliest experiments in national self government by an Indian tribe, the signing of a treaty which relinquished Cherokee claims to lands east of the Mississippi River, and the assembly of Indians for removal west on the infamous Trail of Tears. Today, visitors can see 12 original and reconstructed buildings, including the Council House, Court House, Print Shop, Missionary Samuel Worcester's home, and an 1805 store, as well as outbuildings such as smoke houses, corn cribs and barns. In the visitor center, guest can purchase original Native American arts, crafts and music, and view interpretive exhibits and a 17-minute film.

Hours: Thursday-Saturday / 9AM-5PM Closed Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year's Day.

January 28 Like a time machine by Tsali Hawk
New Echota park is like a trip back in time. They have rebuilt many of the key buildings and the only existing building from the time of the removal is Reverend Worchesters. And when you go back up that trail then see his house you feel as if you went thru a doorway in time. You almost expect Rev. Worchester to welcome you. But even with the rebuilt houses and buildings you feel the history. No not ghosts you just feel a whole lot history happened there. I have Cherokee blood so this place has become a part of my heart. So if you are just surfing in go check it out and take a trip back in time.
