Whether you're looking for a place to spend the weekend or a place to have the perfect wedding, Joe Wheeler State Park can be your dream destination. From small church groups to large conventions, our experienced staff can make your special occasion organized and stress free.

Located in Northwest Alabama, two miles west of Rogersville, off U.S. Highway 72, the park is approximately 50 miles west of Huntsville and 27 miles east of Florence. Interstate 65 and Athens are 22 miles east of the park.
History of the Area
Located in Alabama, the park was established in 1974. It's named after Confederate General Joseph Wheeler from Civil War times. The area spans over 2,550 acres and includes a resort lodge and convention center.

The park features an extensive marina on Wheeler Lake - one of Alabama's largest lakes at more than 60 miles long. In addition to water activities like boating or fishing, it offers camping facilities as well as hiking trails for visitors.

In December each year since its inception, the site hosts "A Plantation Christmas" which recreates traditional holiday celebrations during plantation-era South.

Cabins
Cabins

Our cabins are located on the south side of the Tennessee River near Wheeler Dam. This is a great area that is accessible to both Wheeler and Wilson lakes. There is a boat ramp for Wheeler lake within the cabin area and a boat ramp for Wilson lake within 1/2 mile. Our brick cabins are on a hill that overlooks Wheeler Lake. We also have wood cabins within this area, but they are not lakeside.

We have cabins that will accommodate from 4 persons up to 15. This area is a favorite with fisherman and many return year after year. We also host numerous family reunions and church retreats.

Cabins are equipped for basic housekeeping and cooking. Linens are provided. Cabins have TV's with basic Dish Network programing.

Cottages

These ten newly constructed lakeside cottages are located in the mouth of First Creek, have two or three bedrooms. All have TV?s with satellite reception and DVD players in the great room. Cottages have central heat & air, fireplaces and are equipped with a stove, microwave, refrigerator, dishwasher, toaster and coffee maker. Cottages are supplied with linens, tableware and cookware.
Camping
The campground is a favorite among campers and features large, level sites among towering pines. There are 116 campsites in the improved campground - 110 sites with full hook-ups, which includes water, electric and sewage hook-ups. Joe Wheeler Resort State Park also has a primitive campground in which guests can use the bathhouse located in the adjacent C loop of the campground. These sites do not have electrical hook-ups, but water hydrants are located in this area. Each loop in the campground has a modern bathhouse with hot showers. Park staff clean bathhouses daily.
Lodge
Joe Wheeler's full-service restaurant serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. We are open to the public seven days a week. Relax and enjoy your delicious meal as you gaze out across the lake.

Each Sunday an exquisite buffet is prepared for our Sunday Brunch.

During the summer we offer a Seafood Buffet on Saturday night.

The park has excellent facilities for tournaments and many areas for fisherman to access the water. The lake around the park is close to the dam with deep water and rock bluffs. Smallmouth inhabit these waters and can be the highlight of your trip. First Creek and Second Creek offer excellent largemouth fishing as well as catfish, crappie, bream and stripe. The Decatur "flats" are known for big largemouth and milfoil is abundant and is similar to the type of fishing found on Guntersville Lake. Adjacent to the state park's cabins are the tail waters of Wheeler Dam. Anglers from all over the country come here to sample the variety of fishing found below the dam. Smallmouth congregate here in the oxygen rich water, this is where a former world record smallmouth was caught. Cabin guest can regularly be seen cleaning coolers full of catfish they caught on their trips below the dam. Three types of striped bass inhabit these waters: white bass, hybrid striped bass and saltwater stripe or "rock fish". Crappie are a big draw in the spring if anglers know the right spots. Bream are popular with the bank fisherman and can be caught in many locations around the park.

October 13 Beautiful place
park review stars; one to five Absolutely beautiful place We rented a lakeside cabin.I would give this place a 10 for the beauty inside the cabin and out as well as the staff. All a 10 except the floors and rugs in the cabin. I know they were mopped before arrival because they were sticky. But NOT clean. Our feet were black if we went barefoot or with socks ..Such a beautiful place should not have this issue

park review stars; one to five My wifes family has been comming here every year for a week stay since 1981.Since we been married in 1998 i have came with them. They are fisherman to and bring two or more boats. The boat dock this year was down right dangerous. The dock was leanning to the left bad! We to have asked for a security light so you can see at dark so you dont step on a snake or in something else! Since there is no bathroom or portajohn.I dont think this is to much to ask for.
