State Park Overview:
Seven lakes with crystal clear waters, a sandy swimming beach, and miles of different types of trails make summer an excellent time to visit the park. Before being established as a state park in 1966, Hartman Creek was a fish hatchery, where dams were built to create four spring-fed lakes -- Allen, Hartman, Grebe, and Middle. The park is located on part of the terminal moraine of the Wisconsin glacier, and potholes, gullies, and springs feed the lakes.

No gas motors are allowed on any of these four lakes, so they offer quiet water for paddlers and anglers. They have largemouth bass, perch, bluegill, and other panfish. Fishing piers, accessible to persons with disabilities, are along the east shore of Allen Lake and at Whispering Pines on Marl Lake..

A spillway and dam at the start of Hartman Creek are on the east end of Allen Lake. Hartman Lake has a 300-foot sand beach and large marked-off swimming area. The beach is adjacent to 3 acres of multi-use lawn area containing picnic tables, drinking water, and a combination changing and toilet building.

The park also adjoins Marl, Pope, Manomin, and Knight lakes, natural lakes that are at the head of Waupaca's famed Chain O' Lakes. These lakes allow gas motors, but watercraft are limited to "slow-no-wake" speed.

Paddlers can launch canoes or kayaks from the boat landing off Knight Lane on Manomin Lake and paddle through the east end of Hartman Creek State Park and the Pope Lake Natural Area to Marl Lake, where they can take time to ponder the depths of the lake's crystal clear waters. From the floating dock at Marl Lake, a stone staircase leads to the Whispering Pines Picnic area where paddlers can break for lunch. The picnic area has tables, grills, bathrooms, drinking water, and a vehicle access and parking lot off of Whispering Pines Road.

Horse trails

I love riding my horse here. This park has beautiful horse trails winding through woods and around large fields. A great place to enjoy nature on horseback. The enlarged parking lot is nice. More horse trails and a source of water for the horses would be a huge improvement.

More horse trails?

Hartman creek is a beautiful park and a great place to ride our horses. Would love to see water closer for the horses though.

Nice Trails

I really enjoy the Hartman Creek trails. It has been a good place to work with fresh horses and allows them to get use to strange noises in a safe environment. The parking lot is large enough to accommodate a lot of horse trailers. I would make the suggestion of adding a water source at the parking lot, a permanent bathroom, and maybe a few horse campsites as well.

Horse Trails

Being a horseback rider, I enjoy the trails in the parks. Please maintain the trails and add more if possible. Horseback riding is one of the fastest growing activities in Wisconsin.

Horseback Riding in the Park

I enjoy using the horseback riding trails in the park. The new loop past the dam is nice. The expanded parking lot with picnic tables is so appreciated. I would like to see more horse trails, water available for horses, bathrooms at the parking lot and horse camping available.

Love the Horse Trails

Nice Trails, the more the better..I would like to see more trails that carts will be able to use. Water for the horses would be a very nice addition.

Camping:
Hartman Creek State Park has a 101-site family campground, and five group camping sites. The campsites are located in either a red pine forest or an old apple orchard/hardwood mix of trees. The campground has spacious sites and has two shower and flush toilet buildings. Some campsites are open all winter on a first-come basis.

Reservations can be made by to 11 months ahead of time by calling (888) 947-2757.
Picnicking:
The Allen Lake Picnic Area is a short walk from the campground on an accessible trail. The picnic area includes tables, benches, grills, and swing sets

Another picnic area is at Whispering Pines, on the Waupaca Chain O' Lakes. This beautiful 30-acre property was donated to the park in 1977.

Shelter buildings are available for rent at both these locations (for family gatherings, reunions, company picnics, etc.). There is a rental fee, and each vehicle needs a park sticker, but special group rates may apply.
