History of the Area
1. Formation: The area was established as a state forest in 1929 under the New York State Forest Commission. It was primarily created for the purposes of conserving the natural resources, promoting forest management, and providing public recreational opportunities.

2. Logging Era: Before being designated as a state forest, the land that comprises Franklin State Forest was heavily logged. Large-scale logging operations took place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, resulting in the extraction of valuable timber, mainly white pine.

3. Reforestation Efforts: After the intense logging activities, reforestation efforts were undertaken within the newly established state forest. Various tree species were replanted to restore the forested areas, including white pine, red spruce, balsam fir, and hardwoods.

4. Expansion: Over the years, the size of Franklin State Forest has increased through additional land acquisitions and consolidations. This expansion allowed for a greater protection of the surrounding natural habitats and increased opportunities for public recreation.

Directions
1. Start by heading north on Interstate 87 (I-87) from Albany.
2. Continue driving for approximately 60 miles until you reach Exit 23 towards Warrensburg/Diamond Point.
3. Take the exit and merge onto NY-9N North/US Route 9 North toward Diamond Point/Warrensburg.
4. Stay on this road for about 10 miles until you arrive at a roundabout near Lake George Village.
5. At the roundabout, take the second exit to stay on US Route 9 North/NY-903A West/Lake Shore Drive/Park Road and continue straight ahead.
6. Continue following Park Road as it winds along Lake George's eastern shore for around six miles.
7. After passing Hearthstone Campground & Cabins, turn left onto Buttermilk Falls Rd/Franklin Headwaters Access Trailhead parking area will be located here
8. Park your vehicle at the trailhead parking area and begin exploring Franklin State Forest Number One!
