The largest island in the largest freshwater lake (Flathead Lake) west of Minnesota. Wild Horse Island has been a landmark since the Salish-Kootenai Indians were reported to have used it to pasture horses to keep them from being stolen by other tribes. The park is noted for its wildlife including bighorn sheep, mule deer, songbirds, waterfowl, bald eagles, and falcons, as well as three wild horses. Rare and endangered plant species have also been found on its Palouse Prairie grasslands. The island's scenic shoreline is a favorite of hikers, boaters, swimmers and sailboat enthusiasts. Day-use only is allowed, and there are other strict rules to ensure maintenance of its natural character. There are no facilities and no fees.
Swimming

3. There are no designated swim areas, so visitors can choose their own spot along the shore.
4. Swimming is allowed anywhere around the island but be aware there are no lifeguards on duty.

6. The water temperature varies throughout summer months and may not always be warm enough for comfortable swimming.
7. Swimming near boat docks isn't recommended due to potential safety hazards from boating activities.

Boating
Wild Horse Island Unit in Montana offers various boating options for visitors. The park is only accessible by boat, making it a popular destination for water enthusiasts. Private boats can be used to access the island with several public and private launch facilities available around Flathead Lake. Kayaking and canoeing are also common activities due to calm waters surrounding the island which provide an ideal environment especially during summer months when conditions are most favorable.
Fishing
Wild Horse Island offers excellent fishing opportunities. Anglers can catch species like Yellow Perch, Lake Trout and Westslope Cutthroat Trout. The park also hosts Rainbow trout, Bull trout and Northern Pike for a diverse angling experience. Fishing is allowed from the shoreline or boats with proper permits.

1. Wild Horse Island offers numerous picnic spots with stunning views of Flathead Lake.
2. Picnic tables are scattered throughout the park for visitor convenience.
3. Visitors can enjoy a lakeside lunch at designated areas along the shoreline.
4. The island's open meadows provide perfect spaces for picnics and relaxation amidst nature.
5. Pack your own food as there aren't any on-site dining facilities available in this state park unit.

Birding
Wild Horse Island is home to over 100 bird species, offering excellent opportunities for birdwatching. The island's diverse habitats attract a variety of birds including eagles and ospreys. Birders can also spot songbirds, waterfowl and shorebirds during different seasons.
