Just about 5 miles before reaching the parking lot for Cumberland Falls off of a forest road called Dogslaughter Road. A short hike gets you here and go a little further to get to the Cumberland River.

Cumberland Falls, sometimes called the Little Niagara, the Niagara of the South, or the Great Falls, is a large waterfall on the Cumberland River in southeastern Kentucky. Spanning the river at the border of McCreary and Whitley counties, the waterfall is the central feature of Cumberland Falls State Resort Park, which is surrounded by the Daniel Boone National Forest.

Cumberland Falls State Park
'Cumberland Falls'One of the most beautiful falls Ive photographed. Wonderful park to visit.

Imagine a wall of water falling 60 feet into a boulder-strewn gorge, a whispering mist that kisses the face and a magical moonbow visible on a clear night under a full moon. Known as the "Niagara of the South," the 125-foot wide curtain of water is dramatic day or night. But it's only at night during a full moon that you can see the moonbow, a phenomenon not found anywhere else in the Western Hemisphere!
The area is a natural choice for water-sports enthusiasts, offering white-water rafting and canoeing among other water activities. A professional outfitter is just 5 miles east of the resort.
As spectacular as the setting that surrounds it, the historic Dupont Lodge, built of massive hemlock beams and knotty pine, offers a spectacular view of the Cumberland River Valley. It's the perfect retreat after a day of hiking, rafting, swimming or horseback riding.
Moonbow Dates Visible during clear weather. 2005 moonbow dates: Jan 23-27 Feb 22-26 Mar 23-27 Apr 22-26 May 21-25 Jun 20-24 Jul 19-23 Aug 17-21 Sep 16-20 Oct 15-19 Nov 14-18 Dec 13-17.
Enjoy the great outdoors in the campground, featuring 50 campsites with electric and water hookups. The campground has a central service building with showers and rest rooms, a grocery, and a dump station.
