 | Description - Blowing Wind Cave NWR lies just above the Sauty Creek embayment of TVA's Guntersville Reservoir, seven miles west of Scottsboro, Alabama. The refuge consists of upland hardwoods and limestone rock out crops. The cave has a double entrance, upper and lower, and is critical habitat for endangered gray and Indiana bats. The cave serves as a minor hibernation area for Indian bats and historically as a major maternity cave for gray bats.
Recreation - This Wildlife Refuge is great for wildlife observation, hiking and photography. Blowing Wind Cave itself is gated and not open to the public due to the potential for disturbance of federally endangered gray bats. Other portions of the 264-acre refuge are open to the public.Blowing Wind Cave itself is gated and not open to the public due to thepotential for disturbance of federally endangered gray bats.A major attraction to this cave is when the bats emerge from the cave. The best viewing will be from major maternity cave. To view bats emerging from the cave, park at the refuge entrance gate and walk approximately 100 yards to the cave entrance on yourright. The best viewing will be from either side of the cave entrance. Thisnatural phenomenon only occurs June -August and lasts for approximately one hour near dusk.
Climate - The climate of Alabama's lowlands can be described as subtropical with nearly 60 inches of rain each year. The highest amount of rain reaches the region as afternoon thunderstorms in July, August and September. Summers are extremely hot and humid with temperatures frequently reaching above 100 degrees F. Summer nights cool slightly and provide a good time to travel through the region.Winter temperatures are mild, rarely dipping below 40 degrees with the humidity level at its lowest in November and December. Spring and fall are very pleasant times to visit the region. Spring brings mild temperatures and blooming trees and flowers. During the fall temperatures range from 65 to 85 degrees F with low humidity levels. Northern Alabama is generally cooler than the south due to its higher elevations.
Location - Located 7 miles west of Scottsboro, Jackson County, Alabama. Scottsboro, AL. The cave has a double entrance- Blowing Wind Cave Refuge is located just above the Sauty Creek =embayment on TVAs Guntersville Reservoir, 7 miles west of Scottsboroin Jackson County, Alabama. There is an entrance gate to the refuge on the south side of Highway 72.
