The park was established in 1937. It's named after local businessman and politician Benjamin B. Blitch.
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) developed it during the Great Depression as part of New Deal programs.
It spans over 1,634 acres with a variety of recreational activities including camping, hiking trails and water sports on George L Smith Lake.
In recent years there have been improvements to facilities such as campsites and picnic areas for visitors' convenience.
