Allis State Park is named after Wallace Allis who willed his Bear Mountain Farm to the state of Vermont to be developed as a campground and recreational area. It is located on the summit of Bear Mountain. There is a fire tower located at the picnic area from which there are excellent views of central Vermont. On a clear day, Killington, Pico, and Ascutney peaks are visible to the south; Camel's Hump and Mt. Mansfield to the north; Abraham, Lincoln, and Ellen to the west; the White Mountains of New Hampshire to the east.

Baker Pond is nearby on Route 12, two miles west of the park; North and South ponds lie together one mile east of the park; Sunset Lake is in the village of Brookfield, two miles east of Bear Mountain.

The camping area, picnic area, and ranger's residence were built in 1932 and 1933 by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC).

Visitor Comments, Memories and Reviews
July 25 Very quiet
We visited in the summer of 2007. There were very few visitors so the campsite was extremely quiet which we liked. Some of the lean tos have fantastic views - make sure to ask when you book. The site is remote (up a mountain, at the end of a dirt road) and there is no lake so it will not suit everyone.
